In fact we were surprised with the amount of wildlife full stop! We saw endless kangaroos, goats, sheep, cattle, brumbies and foxes also!
I would say the drive between Broken Hill
and White Cliffs had the most wildlife we have ever seen!
Arriving in White Cliffs we enjoyed exploring the town. Although small, and with a population of just 200 people, it was different to anything we had seen before. With the majority of the town living in homes built underground, to escape the harsh heat that this area receives in the Summer months, it is certainly different to how the majority of Australians live.
The landscape here make you feel as though your on another planet. With what locals say are atleast 50,000 open mines surrounding the town, some still used, but so many disused, you have to be extremely careful where you walk!
We chose to camp directly out in the open fields amongst these deep holes, but made sure we camped well enough back from any of the really deep ones!
Tori, with our caravan in the distance
We spent two days "noodling" (a term used when fossicking for Opals) in the white Shale that has been pulled out of the many surrounding holes.
We were happy when we surprisingly found quite a bit of small pieces of Opal relatively easy!
The nights here were unreal. With no lights from any surrounding towns or cities, and with no lights in the small town of White Cliffs itself, the stars at night were just unreal and you could see thousands of stars spanning across the sky as far as the eyes could see!
After two nights in the unique town it was time to move on...
Next stop...
Crossing back into our home state of South Australia. But first, a detour up to Coober Pedy!!
