Broken Hill

Arriving in Broken Hill we were all quite excited as my Auntie Liz was meeting us here for a few days to explore the region with us.
The day she arrived ended up being a double celebration as we got news that my brother Judd and wife Shiralee had just welcomed their first baby boy, Levi Leslie Cox, into the world

We visited all the major attractions around town. Our first stop was the Miners Memorial lookout. This lookout gave us a view over the entire town below. It also has a wall that lists all the miners whom had lost their lives working in the region.

Next we visited the Geo Rock and Mineral Centre. Here we learnt all about the rocks and minerals that are found in the Broken Hill region.
We went to the Silver City Mint and Art Museum where we got to view the largest acrylic painting painted by a single artist on canvas!
Measuring 100m long and 12m high at its tallest point, and with 9 tonnes of paint used to complete it, the painting represented the NSW Australian outback.
Unfortunately no photos are allowed to be taken within this gallery, so for anyone wanting to see it, you may just have to go have a look yourselves! ;)

We headed out to see the "Living Sculptures In The Desert" display, just before sunset, and enjoyed a yummy steak dinner at the Democratic Club lather that night.

The next day we drove out to the small town of Silverton. Along the way we stopped to have a tour down a disused Mine.
Our tour guide was quite knowledgable and we learnt all about the history and the current way silver is mined.
The mine itself was full of steep uneven stairs, narrow passages and low ceilings that seen us ducking low at times to avoid hitting our heads on the roof and rafters above.

In Silverton we had lunch at the famous Silverton Hotel. Made more famous when it featured in the Mad Max 2 movie.
We wandered around a couple of local Art Galleries and marvelled at some cars painted by local artists.

As Liz had us staying in a lovely old Miners Cottage, (which was HUGE, and alot bigger than your typical cottage!)
I offered to cook dinner that night. Cooking in a large kitchen when usually I have such a small space to work with is always quite a treat!
But the main thing that thrilled me whilst staying in this cottage was the large washing machine that I could use at my leisure! (Yes it is the simple things whilst travelling that you don't always have at your disposal that sometimes thrill you the most!)

No less than 15 loads of washing were put in this 7.5kg beauty!

The next day we headed out to check out the few remaining items on our list.
We visited the Train Museum, Bells Milk bar for lunch - A 50's themed restaurant and museum where we had giant milkshakes!

We visited the Royal Flying Doctors and learnt about the history and current work that the service provides people living in remote locations throughout Australia.

We visited Pro Harts gallery and learnt about the artist behind the painting and the meanings behind a lot of his work. (Again no photos allowed in the Gallery ;))

Being our last night together we headed out for dinner once again! (I'm blaming Liz for my pants feeling slightly on the tighter side!!)
We headed back to the Democratic Club where they had a meat raffle that night.
We had yet another enjoyable dinner and even managed to win not just one, but TWO meat trays!!

The next morning it was time to say our goodbyes to Liz.
As she headed off back home to Adelaide, we headed in the opposite direction up towards the quirky little Opal mining town of White Cliffs!
