Border Hopping!

Arriving in Bendigo we headed out to set up camp at Notley campground. Yet another free camp, it is located in the Greater Bendigo National Park.
Exploring the town we soon noticed that Bendigo had a HUGE amount of Op shops! (For those of you who know us, well you would know just how much we all love a great bargain at an Op shop!!)
We very quickly decided to dedicate an entire day visiting as many of these stores as we could!
Before the day was through we had all acquired a large selection of great bargains!
We also spent another day visiting the Saint Mary's Cathedral and Bendigo Pottery.
The Cathedral was beautiful. Being one of the largest in Australia, we spent a good hour soaking in the amazing craftsmanship that went into this holy place.

At Bendigo Pottery the girls had a great time mastering the art of using a pottery wheel. By the end they had made three impressive pieces each. Four of which we decided to have coloured and fired and sent home to Adelaide!

Getting crafty!

Their finished pieces. Well almost.. 4 are to be coloured and fired in the kiln still :)

After four days exploring Bendigo we headed off towards Echuca and spent the next few days driving back and forth across the VIC/NSW border, whilst following the Murray River towards Swan Hill.
Along the way we stayed at many great campsites right alongside the river. At night we would have a large roaring fire whilst eating our dinner river side.

With Gary's parents travelling towards us on their way back up north, we decided to meet them in Swan Hill and travel to Mildura with them.
We enjoyed many delicious dinners, mainly cooked by Janet and desserts prepared by Janet and the girls. We had a few too many drinks served by Alec most nights and a few of his delicious liquor coffees!

Camped along the river at Swan Hill we had only just arrived back at camp on our second night when some friendly local farmers came down to say hello and invited us back to their farm.
With the offer to feed baby lambs and to ride quad bikes around the 20 acre property, we really didn't need much convincing and had a fun few hours feeding Sheep, Alpacas, Cows, bottle feeding adorably cute Lambs and riding the quad bike around delivering bales of hay to all the animals.

Bottle feeding lambs... We wanted to take them with us!

Awwwwww.... Loveeee....

From here we travelled once again across the border into NSW and visited the small town of Balranald.
Here we checked out an old Woolshed that in its day use to have a flock of up to 5000 sheep to sheer.

Our camp just outside Balranald

A funny story here was when curiousity got the better of me when I noticed a big "START" and "STOP" button along one of the walls... Well of course I'm going to push the big "START" button to see if something would happen! Not thinking anything would actually work as the place has officially been inactive since 2005, I made a bit of a joke as I pushed the button... Well you can imagine my surprise/pretty much jumped out of my skin when a huge wall of rotating wheels and machinery loudly started working!!
Quick as a flash I soon pushed the large "STOP" button!! Whooppssss!!

From Balranald we all drove to Mildura to spend our last two nights together. And yes we stayed at yet another stunning river camp right along the Murray.
Tori was in her element visiting Woodsies Gem shop and made a few new purchases. We had fun getting lost in one of Australia's biggest Mazes and explored the Gem Cave.

We drove out to Wentworth and explored the old Gaol and went to see where the Darling and Murray Rivers join.

After a fun week filled with catch ups, many laughs, great home cooked meals and Gary and his Dad spending hours discussing the pros and cons of pretty much every mechanical and non mechanical device/contraption/part of both caravans and cars, it was time to say our goodbyes.
After one last discussion on solar panels, batteries, caravan tool boxes, the dodgy ways that some parts are installed on new caravans and a final few hugs goodbye, we were on our way towards our next destination...
Broken Hill and a catch up with my Auntie Liz!

Hello Victoria!!

Crossing the border into Victoria, we were not surprised for it to be cold, wet and raining! (After all... It is Victoria... ;))
For our first stop we drove to Kergunyah. Located near Wodonga we had plans to catch up with friends we met in Exmouth. Jody, Shania and Kayb!

Brrrrrr..... SO COLD!!

Having started travelling Australia themselves a few months back, they had now taken up work in a caravan park for the next few months!
Catching up with these friendly faces for a few days was great fun! We drove down to the beautiful town of Bright for the day, and as usual I spent quite ALOT of time taking photos of all the colourful Autumn leaves. So pretty!!

Shania with us all in the background!

Pretty colours around Bright

I just love the different colours of Autumn

At night we sat by the campfire with a few drinks. Chatting about our many adventures to date, and just having a great laugh!

Sitting back with new friends ;)

All to soon it was time to say our goodbyes. With plans to catch up again in the not to distant future back in Adelaide, we know it won't be long before we see this family again!

Heading south towards Lakes Entrance we drove through the Alpine town of Mt Hotham.
Not expecting to see any snow with it only just being the first week of May, we had just planned to check out the views from the mountain tops along the way.
Well we all got quite excited when we unexpectedly came across some snow (OK it was more like ice) but either way it was great fun to jump out the car and have a play!

Daring each other to stick their tongues to the sign...

Probably not the best spot for our picnic lunch!

We spent the next two nights camped down the bottom of a gully alongside a lovely (yet freezing) crystal clear stream. Here we caught up on some much needed clothes washing and YES we did manage to go for a swim! (It wasn't that bad... Once your body went completely numb, you couldn't tell what the temperature was!)

More pretty colours

Such pretty countryside

From here we headed to Lakes Entrance for a overnight stop. We checked out the lookouts and explored the beaches and town.
As usual, despite the cold weather, I spotted yet another snake! This one was on the path down to the beach. Lucky for Gary I pointed it out else he may have just stepped on what looked to be a baby brown...

Next stop was 90 mile beach. With some beautiful sunny days we made the most of it by relaxing on the beach in the sun. Digging giant holes and building sandcastles kept the girls occupied too!

Not a neighbour in sight!

Digging holes!

Relaxing with a book :)

We spent a night at the small fishing town of Port Albert, where we tried our luck with some fishing, but only managed to catch lots of small fish that were not worth keeping.

Port Albert

We headed down to Wilsons Prom to hike to the top of Mt Oberon. Gary and I having visited here some 14yrs ago, were quite keen to return to show the girls some of the sights.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) just as we finished our hike the skies finally opened up and for the next 30mins or so it bucketed down with rain!! Arghhh!!!
With extreme wind and rain forecast for the next few days we decided to head slightly inland in search of some shelter from the elements.

We managed to find a great free camp, Bass Valley Campground, near Korumburra. Nestled in with hills all around us, we were well protected from the wind and even luckier still we didn't get any rain!

With no interest in visiting Melbourne and with having done the Great Ocean Rd many times, we decide to continue heading back up/inland.

Next stop...

Bendigo!
